Introduction

Have you ever thought about making some extra money? 🤔

I have.

You know, bringing in extra cash to help with bills, long-term savings, paying off debt, saving for a vacation?

A side hustle is “an additional job that a person takes in addition to their primary job to supplement their income.”

There are many ways to bring more money into your household in 2023.

My husband and I have participated in side hustles over the years, and it always came in handy when we needed a little extra.

It can feel a little scary today for many, and if you’re a little on edge about the economy or you see some bills coming up that give you pause, consider a side hustle.

FocusGroups.org is always looking for ways to help you make money, save money, and have fun!

Please keep reading to learn about some top hustles of 2023, so you can make some extra cash and reduce stress.

Categories of Side Hustles

There are different ways to make extra money.

To help you think about which way might work best for your lifestyle, I’ve divided them into two categories:

  • Freelancing
  • In-person

Freelancing

Freelancing as a way of working has grown substantially over the last decade with no end in sight.

Here are some facts:

  • Freelancing is poised to become the U.S. majority workforce by 2027.
  • In 2022, freelancing contributed over $1.4 trillion to the U.S. economy
  • Google’s workforce has more freelancers than employees on its payroll
  • Almost ½ of all businesses employ freelancers

Top freelancing skills include writing, editing, copywriting, photography, social media marketing, graphic design, accounting, web design and development, customer service, virtual assistant, tutoring, teaching, and more!

1. Freelancer.com

With over 24 million registered users and over 12 million projects in over 1800 diverse work areas, there’s work if you want it.

Some facts—80% of freelancers earn the same amount, or more, as they would at their regular jobs. They work 36 hours/week, and millennials are the largest share of freelancers, with 55+ making up 26%.

As a freelancer on their platform, you collaborate with and work for clients needing skilled help for short- and long-term projects.

2. Upwork

Upwork’s platform is to connect businesses with great talent around the globe.

Their mission is to create economic opportunities for people worldwide to live better lives.

As of the end of 2020, 180+ countries were represented on Upwork, and 30% of Fortune 100 companies were clients.

$2.3B was earned by Upwork talent in 2020, representing 10,000 skills across 90+ categories.

3. Fiverr

Fiverr is the world’s largest online market platform for digital services.

You can offer your services, including graphic design, proofreading, copywriting, voiceovers, film editing, and more.

You can work as much or as little as you want and make $ 100s to $1,000s a month.

Fiverr provides resources to large, small, and entrepreneurial companies by bringing a skilled workforce to them.

*NOTE—I’ve used Fiverr many times for jobs that required particular expertise that I don’t have and would take me too long to learn.

In-person

1. Neighbor.com – self-storage

Neighbor.com allows people needing space for “stuff” to connect with owners with extra storage space to work together. Sort of an Airbnb of self-storage. 😉

If you have unused space that’s not being used—a garage or an extra room, why not consider renting it?

How it works—take pictures of your space and list them on the neighbor.com site.

You can choose your asking price along with a brief description and any restrictions potential renters should know.

Neighbor.com site states $100-$400 per month as income potential. They have an earning calculator to help you determine what you can earn.

2. Uber.com

We all know Uber!

  • You must be 21 years old
  • You must have a valid driver’s license
  • Use an eligible 4-door vehicle
    • *NOTE — each state may have their requirements
  • Proof of residency in your city, state, or province
  • Proof of vehicle insurance
  • A driver profile photo
  • Complete a screening online to review your driving record and criminal history.

The average Uber driver's salary in the U.S. is $37,602 as of Oct. 27, 2022

Other driving and delivery jobs include:

Doordash

Ubereats

Instacart

3. Turo

Turo is a car rental platform where travelers can rent cars anywhere and wherever they want from private car owners.

Private car owners can earn extra money by making their cars available.

According to Turo, the average U.S. host earns up to 10K/year/car.

*NOTE—If you’re interested in positively affecting climate change, Turo is offsetting 100% of its estimated global carbon emissions by investing in greenhouse gas-reducing projects such as The Darkwoods Project in British Columbia.

Consider Surveys

While not considered a full-fledged side hustle, working on survey sites and completing surveys, product testing, focus groups, etc., is another way to earn cash, gift cards, and freebies.

A few survey sites to consider that we collaborate with are:

YouGov.com

Pinecone Research

Ipsos iSay

SurveyJunkie

Final Thought

There are side hustles if you’re feeling a little nervous about today’s economy and if considering making a little extra income from 100s-1000s a month makes sense.

We live in a different time where, for many, a single job isn’t enough to make ends meet.

If this is you, please consider looking into other opportunities to make cash.

We are in an unprecedented time that allows many of us to make income in ways we never imagined.

Use your imagination, and think about some of the above side hustles.

You can do it. You are capable of so much…
